Stolen moments

This couple is grabbing some quality time with each other amidst the busy schedules and busy life. The trees kind of depict all the daily ruckus that goes on in life and finding some quiet time amidst the humdrum of life.

Parvati Pune

Located in the center of the city, at a height of 2100 feet, the Parvati temple which is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati provides an aerial view of the entire Pune city. I have fond memories of this place where I went in my childhood with friends from school for a picnic. The 103 stairs that lead up to the temple were of no consequence then today is quite an ordeal. The temple dates back to the Peshwa era 1749 AD to be precise. Built by Peshwa Nanasaheb its existence has been shown even before that during the time of Chatrapati Shivaji. The temple has historical significance to the Peshwa history and has a lot of underground tunnels (closed today) going upto the Shaniwar wada. You can read more about it here. Quite simply it is today a place of respite for Punekars and their children for a bite of peace and history respectively.

Idol

Durga Puja is the main festival of Bengalis. It is believed that Mother Durga comes to earth (her mother's home) every year for Navratra that is nine nights...... twice a year. We worship Durga as the daughter of the household and pamper her for the last six days of the navratra from sashti to Dashami. A lot of stories are associated with this festival which is held on a grand scale. You can read them here.

The festival is also the biggest social occasion as Durgotsavs are not celebrated in the households but in the groups and gatherings. Men and Women dress up in their finery for this five day festival. In Kolkata the city stops completely in these five days and the people are all out strutting their finery, shopping, gifting, eating, all of it on a very very large scale. They go all out and about in this festival. It is my favorite time of the year.

Durgotsav is celebrated twice a year....... once during March and once during September-October, depending on the moon. This is the idol of Ma Durga during the Sharadiya Durgotsav festivities last year in September. The second pic is of all kids with their pets and Mahishasur.

Skywatch

This pic is a little stark...... dark not like the other sky pics that I have taken. But I always wanted to take pics of the moon. Finally got some really good shots on Full moon this time. It was fun experimenting with different shutter speeds.

One Foggy morning : Pune City : Aerial view

Palkhi

Orange is the sacred color for all Hindus. Orange flags denote everything holy. This pic was taken during Palkhi an annual pilgrimage to the city of Pandharpur. Lakhs of pilgrims from all walks of life and all over the state of Maharashtra walk from Alandi and Dehu in Pune to Pandharpur, a distance of 204 kms which takes them 22 days. They reach Pandharpur on Ashadi Ekadashi to take part in the religious festivities there.

The palkhi meaning palanquin which carries the sandals of Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram both saints of Maharashtra are taken from Alandi and Dehu respectively to the Vithal (Vishnu)temple in Pandharpur. These warkaris who go with the palkhi sing praises of the lord all their way their. Its a spectacle to be seen. Personally I like the enthusiasm and the fervor with which these people walk for 22 days.

Reflections in the water

I took this pic last week at a lake close to my home. This new place is an upcoming place still not the concrete jungle. There still are some beautiful lush farmlands and the river is still beautifully flowing with abundance of birds. On checking the pics in the comp I realised that I had also got the reflections of the birds as they flew. The very fact that my presence did not bother them made me realise that it was probably a regular haunt for bird watchers.

Skywatch

Winter is finally catching up in this part of the world. We've had some real chilly morning and evenings. The sky also has been quite cloudy. But the moon is beautiful. I just can't stop clicking it. I venture out every night in the cold armed with the tripod trying to get better and better shots.
